Girls Embracing Moral Standards (GEMS)
GEMS in a "nut shell" is a mentoring program for young girls.
To improve the academic achievement, spiritual wellness, self-esteem, social competence, and avoidance of problem/high-risk behavior by providing a relationship with caring women who work to help girls achieve their potential.DescriptionGirls Empowerment Mentorship Society (GEMS) is a mentoring program for girls in the Baltimore, Maryland area. The organization was founded in January of 2009 by Kim Parks-Barrett to create an atmosphere of sisterhood among young women. Our mentees, known as GEMS, are Girls Embracing Moral Standards, Girls Exercising Mighty Strength, and Girls Excited to Meet their Savior!
We provide a combination of classes, discussion, and trips in order to foster:
Healthier relationships and lifestyle choices
Better attitudes about school
Higher college enrollment rates and higher educational aspirations
Enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence
Improved behavior, both at home and at school
Stronger relationships with parents, teachers, and peers
Improved interpersonal skills
Decreased likelihood of initiating drug and alcohol use
Knowledge and application of Bible principles
